The operation
Today, the implantation of an artificial shoulder joint is a routine operation. The procedure is similar for most types of prostheses: the damaged bone and tissue parts are removed and the remaining bone is prepared and shaped with the appropriate surgical instruments to achieve proper fit of the implants. This is followed by the fixation of the individual prosthetic components.
The operation can be subdivided into four main steps:
- Removal of the diseased parts
- Preparation of the bones for the implants
- Insertion of the prosthesis
- X-ray check
In the case of a fracture prosthesis, the procedure is slightly different because in addition to the implantation, the fracture has to be treated.
