Short stem prosthesis
The short stem prosthesis is also implanted as a total prosthesis but has a substantially shorter stem. If the bone quality is good, it can be used as an alternative to the conventional total prosthesis.
Implantation of a short stem prosthesis offers several advantages, such as shorter operation times or reduced blood loss. Additionally, more bone in the upper arm is preserved, which is a great advantage in case of a future exchange operation (revision).
Short stem prostheses are fixated by cement-free anchorage. To make the bone grow onto the stem more quickly, the stem is provided with a special coating the head is made of ceramic or, depending on the model, of metal.
