The polyethylene

The polyethylene is placed between the femoral and the tibial components. Depending on the model, it either snaps into the tibial implant or can, within certain limits, move (rotate) freely on its surface.

The inlay serves as a shock absorber between the two metal components and thus assumes the function fulfilled by the cartilages and the meniscus on the healthy side.
