Preparation of the bones for the implants

By means of special cutting blocks and templates, the thigh and shank bones are cut to shape so that the prostheses fit exactly when they are inserted. After the last cuts and drillings, a test prosthesis is inserted. This serves to determine the optimal position and the exact size of the final implants as well as to check whether all cuts were performed correctly. This step is very important and decisive for the later mobility and stability of the joint.

A so-called tourniquet is often used for the operation: an inflatable cuff interrupts the blood flow to provide the surgeon with a unimpeded view of the operating area.
