Removal of the diseased parts
Access to the hip joint is through a skin incision in the upper portion of the thigh. To access the diseased hip joint, the joint capsule (the connective tissue surrounding the joint) is partially removed. The femoral head is separated from the thigh bone with a surgical device (electric or pneumatic saw) and is removed so that the hip socket is well visible. This gives the surgeon free sight of the hip socket and he can begin with the dissection.
The hip socket is freed from diseased capsular and cartilaginous tissue and prepared with a semi-spherical mill until healthy bone tissue appears. This will ensure the firm anchorage of the artificial cup.
